Te Ohu Kaimoana Briefing to the Incoming Minister for Oceans and Fisheries 2023

This briefing was post the 2023 general election and prepared for the Ministers for Oceans and Fisheries as an introduction to Te Ohu Kaimoana, its priorities and the priorities of iwi in regard to fisheries and aquaculture for the Government term.

Below are the priorities that were communicated to the Government from the perspective of Te Ohu Kaimoana:

  1. Upholding the Deed of Settlement 1992
  2. Progression of the Māori Fisheries Amendment Bill
  3. Aquaculture settlements – satisfying settlement obligations, supporting iwi regional development and providing iwi with open ocean aquaculture opportunities
  4. Remove the Kermadec Ocean Sanctuary Bill from the Parliament Order Paper, in favour of jointly designed initiatives for oceans health
  5. Addressing the overlap of jurisdiction of government departments
