Te Ohu Kaimoana is an iwi-owned organisation established to protect and enhance the rights and interests of Māori relating to tino rangatiratanga of our taonga, with a focus on fisheries. The role:
Te Ohu Kaimoana are looking for a Senior Solicitor to join their busy Wellington based office reporting directly to the General Counsel. This is a small but dynamic team, which will give you the opportunity to collaborate closely across the organisation to develop comprehensive and critical legal guidance for Te Ohu Kaimoana and the iwi we are in service to. This role is all about your passion for the mahi you deliver. We want you to play a critical role in developing our legal strategies, mentoring our solicitors while nurturing their future growth and knowledge.

A little more about the role, you will:

• Provide end-to-end expert legal advice with the General Counsel/Poumatua Whakamahere Ture to both Te Ohu Kaimoana and the Mandated Iwi Organisations we serve, to enhance, support and protect Māori Fisheries and Aquaculture rights – including rights provided through the Māori Fisheries Settlement and Te Tiriti o Waitangi
• Provide guidance and assistance to the Senior Leadership team while mentoring and developing the Solicitors in the legal team
• Grow and build strong external relationships with the Board of Directors, Iwi, Crown officials and various CEO’s and NGO leaders
• Contribute to Board papers and lead priority work programmes
• Set and maintain clear, iwi focused culture and environment consistent with the values, and principles of Te Ohu Kaimoana

What you’ll need to succeed:

• A tertiary qualification in law and a current practicing certificate (or be eligible to hold one)
• Sound legal technical skills, with a depth of experience in a senior level position
• Experience working within a Māori organisation or similar
• A genuine interest in advancing the interests of iwi individually and collectively
• Excellent relationship building and management experience focusing on delivering outcomes for internal and external stakeholders
• Strong problem-solving skills with a confidence in your mahi and abilities
• Understanding of Te Reo and ability to operate within a driven Māori organisation, knowledge of tikanga Māori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi is an advantage but not essential
